1964 - beauty, ain’t it? The rest of the pics in this post are pointing out Ford scraping the bottom of the design barrel and mostly for Jarod Rose’s amusement.
Okay, the back is pretty obvious. Astoundingly obvious:
Three light rear and the Breezeway window from the Mark, behind/over-wheel chrome accent on the Montclair from the Premiere/Capri, body lines/bumper/etc. from both.
Up front... hey, what’s that grill element? It’s Pikachu!.
Okay, it’s only similar.
However, the relief into the bumper, raised bumper on the ends... for no particular reason, it seems the ghost of Giant Fat Lincolns Past (the ‘59
in particular)
was haunting
Mercury
for a large part of the next decade.

Of course, the behind/over wheel shiny accent thing cropped up elsewhere, too:

That ain’t the half of it. The Comet(which was going to be an Edsel before that line got binned) became officially a Mercury in 1962, at which point they redesigned the rear end and started sticking old Lincoln tail lamps on it.
1960/1961 Comet Rear:
For the 1962 Comet, they decided to harken back to the ‘58 lincoln:
For 1963 they gave up all pretense and actually *used* 1960 Lincoln tail lamps. The lens and chrome spear trim interchange, I can’t recall now if the bases do, but they looks the same.

Yep. All correct - the ‘62 in particular is referencing the Continental and not the Premiere of ‘58, which is a good thing because the Premiere’s lights looked a bit gooney:

I guess you could call it top down design. Put it on the top tier luxury models first and then let the design trickle down to the less brands (sorry Montego). My favorite Lincoln from the 58/60 era is a toss up between the 60 vert and the Hess & Eisenhart formal sedan shown in the final photo. All these photos were taken from the 58/60 Facebook page . Which by the way you should check out (although several though the 59 was beyond saving.) The people there are not as cool as they are here but they are experts on the model.
Also how is the 59 looking in it’s new home?

I never cared for those taillights

I love the massive rear deck the breeze window created. It looks like a damn aircraft carrier deck. And I think it made sense for Lincoln/Merc to do top down styling. Besides by the time those Mercs came out Lincoln was forging a new legend with the coach door Continental anyway.

The shape would be fine, but the fact that everything around them is chrome-edged and they aren’t is absolutely jarring. It looks like somebody stuck on random blocks from some toy.

You know, I made a statement the other day that in some respects the big Lincolns were a styling misstep and not the direction styling was headed, but I don’t think that’s quite right. What’s more like what happened, particularly viewing the mid to late 60s Thunderbirds, Mercurys, and others, is that the Lincoln jumped
too far.
It didn’t accurately presage the early 60s at all, true, but it ended up as a combination of late 50s style and
late 60s.
It even presaged the brief ‘65-’66 stacked headlight craze and the headlights-in-grill-area craze, and even featured a more
ponton
and rigid 3-box sort of styling which was only just then catching on with Benz. Small wonder it looks weird.
Right now it’s tarped with the front subframe up on cribbing so I can measure things and so I can get to the front wheels and unstick them. We’ve got stray 14” tires on it to make it possible to move. In fairness, you could argue the ‘59 is beyond saving but getting saved anyway.

That’s a good point it was a combination of lates 60s and late 50s styling. I never considered that before. One thing that always stuck out to me was instead of going crazy on tailfins they were quite restrained. Compared to the competition.
It was only one wheel right? Hopefully it won’t be too much trouble.

Related to the 58/60 group, since I don’t facebook anymore, might you ask for a picture of a rocker underside? I’m mostly sure of a good way to put it back together, but I don’t actually know how the seaming and overlaps are supposed to look. I know the outer rocker fascia comes down past the main bottom surface and curls under and back up, and have a rough idea of the rest, but where the actual seams would be is just GONE.

Appreciated. I could just wing it, but I’d like to at least pretend I care. Not that I can get one of them to run a borescope camera up inside the rocker, but a view of the outside would answer a bunch of questions.
